UnionPay International Partners with Interswitch East Africa (Kenya) Ltd to Accelerate Payment Digitalization UnionPay International (UPI) and Interswitch East Africa (Kenya) Limited announced their partnership today, confirming Interswitch becomes a Third-Party Service Provider (TPSP) for UnionPay International in East Africa.The partnership supports the vision and mission that enable further payment digitalization across the continent, allowing cardholders and merchants within the region to transact seamlessly and conveniently across various platforms on the global UPI network.The agreement with Interswitch will facilitate UnionPay card acceptance across ATMs, Points-of-Sale, QR Payments and online payments, thereby consolidating the existing partnership with Interswitch in West Africa, helping to drive wider acceptance on the continent. First for AccèsBanque Madagascar – Direct Connected POS Devices to the UnionPay Network The UnionPay International (UPI) and AccèsBanque Madagascar (ABM) partnership concluded April 2019, resulted in ABM pioneering the first domestic UnionPay card issuance in Madagascar. The bank followed this major milestone up with another first for Africa, by being the first domestic acquiring institution to offer direct connected POS devices to the UnionPay network. The recent development will allow local merchants to accept UnionPay cards in various ways, including physical cards, contactless payments and QR code payments.“This initiative will enable merchants in Madagascar to accept UnionPay cards in the most cost-effective manner, thereby increasing the footprint to meet ABM cardholders’ growing demands for safe and smooth payment services via ultra-modern POS devices deployment,” Mr. Mikhail Velichko explained, Managing Director of ABM.“QR Code and contactless payment being safer alternatives have experienced unprecedented growth rates amid the Covid-19 pandemic,” Mr. Luping Zhang said, “In answer to this, we at UPI are committed to offering safer and smoother payment experiences to our customers. UnionPay International Partners with GIMAC to Grow Financial Inclusion and Digital Transformation in the Region UnionPay International (UPI), the world’s largest payment network in terms of card issuance, has concluded a strategic partnership with GIMAC (Groupement Interbancaire Monétique de l’Afrique Centrale), through which the two parties will jointly optimize the payment service of UnionPay in the CEMAC zone, comprising of Cameroon, Central African Republic, Chad, Congo, Equatorial Guinea and Gabon.As the first step of the partnership, GIMAC has rolled out the ATM acceptance of UnionPay in Cameroon with National Financial Credit Bank (NFC), Union Bank of Cameroon (UBC) and the microfinance institution La Regional. In the next few weeks, three more financial institutions, including one bank and two microfinances will be enabled for UnionPay ATM acceptance in Cameroon. UnionPay International and eLipa Expand Online Payment Services to Support Consumers and Merchants UnionPay International (UPI), the card scheme with the world’s largest cardholder base, has responded to the global fight against COVID-19 by working with its partners to increase consumer access to key online services. Today, UPI announced that the successful integration of UnionPay Online Payment (UPOP) with eLipa recently has enabled UnionPay cardholders to access over 8000 online merchants across Africa.eLipa is an innovative payments processing solution and payment gateway for Africa-focused merchants, helping businesses to receive payments online or in physical shops via an online/point-of-sale transaction processing gateway. eLipa serves a large clientele in private, public and non-profit sectors. These include leading brands like Jumia, Glovo, Dominos, Decathlon, National Museums of Kenya, Ramtons Electronics, MyDawa, Urban Coffee, as well as banks, churches, entertainment clubs and restaurants, the Africa Legal Network among others. This business is carried out in Kenya as iPay (www.ipayafrica.com). eLipa also operates in Tanzania, Uganda, Rwanda and Togo, with more countries lined up for entry.UPI has seen an increased global online transaction by around 20%, as more people are adopting digital payments to minimise physical contact and cash handling amid the global pandemic.In order to support the African customers to fight against COVID-19 and to sustain the adoption of digital payments, UPI is optimising its “contactless” payment services, including online and mobile payment services.Mr. Luping Zhang, General Manager at UnionPay International Africa Branch, sees the completion of this project as “another milestone in UnionPay’s expansion on the continent”. The Nilson Report (Issue 1154) shows that UnionPay ranks first among all card schemes worldwide in terms of cards issuance and transaction volume.
